Philip Murdoch was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 24, 1968. He was born into a very international family with a Brazilian father, Uruguayan mother, Argentine grandmother, and American and British grandparents. Philip is married to Renee and has four children, Julia (15), Micah (13), Caroline (11) and Ethan (8). After having grown up in Brazil he traveled to Louisiana, USA to study civil engineering at Louisiana State University. Following his graduation he worked as a civil engineer in the USA, Mexico and Chile for four years, until accepting a ministry position as the Chief of Staff and Administrator of a large church in the Southern USA.
In 2000 Philip and his family returned to Brazil to initiate a local church (www.ilan.org.br) and church planting ministry called Light to the Nations (www.lighttothenations.org). The church has now been well established and Philip works extensively mentoring a team of church planters through the Surge Churches (www.surgechurches.com) . Together they have planted over 520 churches in the last 7 years. As a part of this missions project Philip travels around Brazil holding church planting seminars to train young church planters, publishes training material through a ministry publishing company and coordinates a network of pastors through multi-city pastor’s breakfasts.
Additionally to the church planting efforts Philip’s ministry includes an apprenticeship program called The Global Apprenticeship Program or GAP (www.thegap.com.br). The focus of this is to train and develop young men and women from Brazil and America who feel they may have a call to full time missions or church planting.
In 2006, Philip opened a new publishing company called Editora Luz às Nações (www.edilan.com.br). The focus of this publishing company is to assist in the publication, promotion and distribution of Christian training materials and books currently unavailable in Portuguese. Editora Luz às Nações currently publishes a series of training materials for the training of local church members as well as church planting manuals and other books. The company distributes to all states in Brazil as well as internationally.
